I cant believe what is happening in my once beautiful country, in 2 states they are under water and in mine we are in the worst drought ever. and fires all around

What i cant believe is the do gooders , greenies, people that sit in city offices telling people who live in the bush that they cant cut tress around their houses, they dont want to clear all the land just a few feet as a fire break, but no we must leave it so when we have a fire as we do most summers the trees go up and so do the houses, and as its drier than ever it moves so much faster and has so much more fuel. being in these areas weekly i have often asked my daughter why they dont clear all the dead trees along the rd, her answer they arent allowed to remove them. why???? they arent cutting them they are reusing them in winter and removing a fire hazard. at least if there was a clear area along the rds people would at least have a chance.

I know of one person who did clear around his house on 10 acres it isnt alot of trees you wouldnt know he had removed them and what happened he was fined $100,00, the result, his house still stands.

Im one of the lucky ones, my daughter and granchildren got out and stayed with me luckily their home still stands, the fire went around them, I also still have my horse it stopped 4km from her, but so many have lost so much, some have lost whole families and its still burning.

I hope from this great disaster common sense can prevail and they do allow people to make their homes fire safe, and also clean up the sides of rds so people at least can have a chance to escape if need be.

I have read and heard about what is happening in Australia - and I honestly can't beleive that you are not allowed to clear a firebreak.... that's nuts.

In the UK - someone recently placed an Obituary in the London Times which read as follows...

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who
has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was,
since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He
will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the
worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend
more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children,
are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended
from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for
reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the
job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly
children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could
not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses;
and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a
burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in
her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by
his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son,
Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

i believe the term for this is "the nanny state"; unfortunately, nanny always seems to lack any appreciable amount of common sense (perhaps she's been at the sauce)...

glad you came through it ok, marg - and your obituary is spot on, stuart.
