Today the ALA sent news about the bill in Congress that was to allow the FDA regulatory powers over tobacco advertising. Here's the news:

Quote:
Good News: The US Senate, in response to the overwhelming amount of pressure from the public (i.e. you!) and the hard work of our Senate champions, specifically Senator DeWine (R-OH) and Kennedy (D-MA), passed a stand alone FDA regulation bill — the DeWine/Kennedy FDA bill (S. 2974). The measure passed by voice vote on Sunday night.

Bad News: The House continues to block FDA legislation. Leaders in the US House of Representatives, Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), Ways and Means Chair Bill Thomas (R-CA), and Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert (R-IL) killed the FDA amendment in the Foreign Sales Corporation (FSC) Tax bill H.R. 4520.

So where does that leave us? Thanks to the strong leadership of Senators DeWine (R-OH), Durbin (D-IL), Harkin (D-IA), Kennedy (D-MA), McCain (R-AZ) and Representatives Waxman (D-CA) and Davis (R-VA) and many others, we have propelled FDA regulation to a top issue on the Congressional agenda. The public and now the Senate have clearly indicated their support for FDA regulation of tobacco. We will call on the House to take up S. 2974 when it reconvenes in November. So we live to fight another day. We will build on the momentum created by this campaign to push Congress to stand up for our children and pass meaningful FDA regulation of tobacco products.

Thanks to all of you for sending the e-mail to your senators. I think we have a great opportunity to make a difference in the future of our country, and I hope everyone will pay attention to this issue. It could mean saving lots of lives from the miseries of tobacco addiction, and I think we all know what a worthwhile thing that would be!

People have choices where to put their money in a free society. If you choose to pay for a carton of cigarettes and kill yourself that's your choice not Obama's.

If you choose to pay for healthcare with that money that's your choice also.

We need to quit crying foul because of irresponsible individuals who now want the Leftists to bail them out and have others pay for it.
