This is one of the grossest consumer fraud disinformation campaigns of all time, and one of the reasons I finally quit, because I was so pissed. I trusted the FDA, and the tobacco industry. I never believed the surgeon general. Maybe if he looked like General Tsao instead of Everett Koop I would have listened. Anyway, it's not just tobacco in those innocent white cigarettes. Here's the list!

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme are in them too! I never knew!

By the way, these ingredients were never tested as combustible agents, either as seperate components or in various combinations with each other, so the resulting compounds can be widely varied.

Good Grief....why on earth are there so many chemicals? What is the reason for this overdose of toxins that are added to tabacco? I don't get it. Marijuana smokes without the chemicals whynot tabacco....does anyone know?

It really grosses me out looking at this list. Thank you for posting it.

Actually you are thinking of marijuana grown in ones garden out in the open even then some hit it with chemicals. Grow Ops now are all chemical the roots never touch dirt at all there is just no regulation as to what was in the mix. Don't swap cigs for something that is way more dangerous in the long run. Keep in mind one Marijuana joint is equivalent to smoking several times that amount in cigs. I realize thet most say it is habitual rather than addictive but the newest studies out are starting to prove those earlier studies wrong.

Laurie wrote:

one reason is that many of these chemicals cause reactions that make cigarettes more addictive and decrease the amount of exposure to nicotine that leads to a person becoming addicted.

for instance, ammonia and urea (yes, it's on the list, too; and, as its name suggests, it's a major component of urine) are added because they strip hydrogen ions from the nicotine molecules, causing the cigarette smoke to release "freebase" nicotine; freebasing nicotine (as with freebasing cocaine) causes the drug to reach the brain much more quickly than it would otherwise. here's an excerpt from an interesting article that talks about this particular issue (link to full article follows):

Quote:
OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University) lead researcher James F Pankow, PhD, professor of environmental and biomolecular systems, explained that the key difference between freebase nicotine and normal nicotine lies in the speed with which the different forms reach the brain and take effect.

According to James Pankow, normal nicotine is carried into the lungs in a "solid" form on the billions of particles that make up the smoke. This is then absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to the brain where it takes effect. In contrast, freebase nicotine is released as a gas from the cigarette and is absorbed much more quickly into the bloodstream, causing an almost instant "hit" of nicotine to the brain. The brain soon becomes addicted to obtaining regular "hits" of nicotine and it is generally believed that the faster the "hit" is delivered, the more quickly a person becomes addicted.

The difference between normal nicotine and freebase nicotine is similar to the difference between ordinary cocaine and crack cocaine. For both crack cocaine and freebase nicotine, the molecules of the drugs are "freebased" by having hydrogen ions stripped off them, which allows them to vaporise easily into a gas. This gas then passes almost instantaneously into the bloodstream and to the brain, causing a sudden "hit" or rush.

James Pankow believes that the increased speed of the "hit" as crucial. "Since scientists have shown that a drug becomes more addictive when it is delivered to the brain more rapidly, freebase nicotine levels in cigarette smoke are at the heart of the controversy regarding the tobacco industry's use of additives like ammonia and urea, as well as blending choice in cigarette design," he said.

Levels of freebase nicotine in cigarettes may be raised by adding chemicals which can strip away hydrogen ions from nicotine molecules, such as ammonia.

seems like the more you know about big tobacco, the less there is to like.

The worst part of all this is our Governments let them do it as no way do they want to loose the tax dollars.

Kevin stop with the urine talk. All I can picture is a bunch of people lapping at the inside of the TOILET. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Melody...no I am not smoking marijuana sorry if my post sounded like that. Yes, I am sure that marijuana gets sprayed at some point however there is no comparison to the added chemicals in cigarettes. Our vegetables get sprayed, too...unless you are buying organic.

Kevin, very interesting article which again reminds me that the tabacco industry's job is not just selling cigarettes but making sure we become addicts. Really disgusting behavior from a legal industry. Thank you for the insight.

Wanted to revive this post...

The worst part about this list, which a couple people mentioned, is that this stuff is FDA-approved to be safe in food, not to smoke. It's nice to know that the FDA is regulating things, so I can safely eat a cigarette.

I noticed citronella in the list. Citronella is used in those bug-repellant candles, you know, the kind that warn you to burn it outdoors only and not to breathe the fumes.

I read somewhere that marijuana has like 5 times as much tar as the same amount of tobacco... and it doesn't even keep bugs away while you're puffin on it!
