I haven't been on the boards for a while. Why? Because I've been so darn busy. Busy doing what? Training for my first 5K.
I really just wanted to come on here and talk about how cool it is to watch your body change. I've always been a runner. As pathetic as that sounds. I would jog 2 miles and then have a smoke. My running suffered because of it. I would come back coughing up stuff and couldn't really run as hard as I want to.
Now, I am up around 3.5 miles and I'm able to breathe. I get done running and don't have to sit and gasp for air. I'm able to breath! It's wonderful! I have become addicted to running. I eat, sleep, and drink running.
If you haven't taken your new lungs out for a spin, I suggest you do so. You will be shocked at how much easier running/walking/biking, etc is now.
Four weeks, one day, 10 minutes and 8 seconds. 290 cigarettes not smoked, saving $58.01. Life saved: 1 day, 10 minutes.
Hooray. 1 month. No cigs.

It's always so amazing when we are how much better our body functions without cigarettes!
You are doing incredibly well on this journey, and never lose sight of how much harder it used to be.
(although I'm not a runner, I'm waiting for my first doctor's visit, just for that moment when they realize I can breathe again. Problem is (well, not really problem), I've had no reason to visit the doc since I quit!) _________________

I am so glad you have rediscovered your love of running. I discovered running about three months into my Quit. Unfortunately my 47 year old knees aren't too happy with my new found love so we don't spend as much time with each other as I would wish. Running is one of the gifts of your Quit. There are so many more in store for you! Enjoy! _________________

Buddagirl, I was never into running. My body was not built for running. I am built for riding, biking, flying, driving, walking, even long distances, but not running.
Especially when I smoked, running a 1.5 mile distance once a year for military PT would kill me. I was in the Air Force, flying was faster than running.
But, I knew guys who would run for the high. I even met a guy I called super Dave who would run even when the temperature was -30 degrees in Alaska, he would run 5 miles. His face mask would be covered with icicles, but it triggered some endorphins to create a high for him.
Jack Daniels did the same for me. Besides, running knocked the ice cubes out of my glass, so I had to stop.
Your mileage obviously is different, so enjoy it while you can! _________________

Thanks guys. I'm going to see how my first few 5k's go. I really would like to work my way up to a half marathon. It would be awesome to make it up to Disney World in January for that.
I'm pretty sure that I can do it. I've always been a runner. My entire family runs. (Minus my sister.) I took up smoking kind of out of spite to my healthy running family. They're happy to have me back.
Maybe my dad and I will do a father/daughter race. I won't do that until I know I can outrun him. Ha! |
