That's what they are, cigarettes. Our very good friends who live a hour or so north of us continue to smoke like chimineys. As we've been friends for almost 20 years, and used to do everything together, our friendship has waned somewhat over the last year or so. Some of this was the physical distance, but a LOT of it was that Mr. Bill and I quit, and our friends contineud to smoke.
We changed, they didn't. Life went on for us all, and although remaining friends, there were no longer those long phone chats each week, or weekend get-togethers at their house or ours. We hadn't been invited to their house in over a year....always because we or they were too busy, or something.
After a long span of no phone calls between us, I picked up the phone a week ago on Sunday evening, and called them. We chatted, Carole has had much pain from an undiagnosed leg problem, Roy, uncharacteristically was lying down because of arm pain. Now, this was serious, because Roy is usually the energizer bunny, who keeps going no matter what.
Well, I was concerned, but heard no more from them until an E mail that came to my house on Friday AM after I had left for work. Roy had gone to the hospital in the middle of a heart attack. Both carotid arteries were seriously blocked, along with the artery in one leg. They had him in the operating room 45 minutes after entering the emergency room, and put stints in.
Happy to say he's now home and doing OK. A year and a half ago, we were just like them, puffing up a storm.
I keep thinking....maybe Bill and I did damage, and we just don't know it yet. Roy is only 55. That may sound old to some of you....but it's not really. I guess it's a wake up call. It's hard when it hits so close to home. I keep hoping that every day that goes by,I'm improving my health, and getting less likely to be another victim of old Thanks for listening. _________________

Pamela, it's sad to hear about your friends. Why, oh why did we spend years slowly killing ourselves? I'm so happy that at last I saw the light and quit smoking. I'm sure you and Mr. Bill feel the same about yourselves.
Wish there were something we could do to help others get through the quit process and enjoy the freedom we now have. _________________

Pam I'm right there with you. Just maybe this will be his wake up call and they will quit. Hubby and I QUIT last summer as they had thought he had had a heart attack. Best thing that ever happened to us. Don't loose hope for them. _________________

Pam,
Sorry to hear about your friend. It's hard. Like Melody said...don't give up hope for them.

Pam, so sorry about your friends. We can't know what damage we did but we can't change the past. We can remain optimistic about the future. Deb is right. With every minute that passes we are healing and gaining strength. Be well! _________________

Pam I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I pray for an inspirational recovery for him. And bless you for calling them to see how they are doing.
As for the damage we have already done. Lets focus on today and what time we do have. You get up every morning and thank the Lord for a new day. We have no idea when our time is up. But by quitting smoking we are not quickening it.
I am sure we have all heard this:
"My grandfather was 90 years old, smoked 3 packs a day." "Yeah, well my mother never smoked and died of cancer at 34".
We don't know the time or place. BUt what we can do is live according to the Word. Talk to God each day. Ask Him for the strength to keep us away from cigarettes. I am so happy that God loves me whether I smoke or not. But He is happier that I don't. I can serve Him so much better when I don't smoke. He is with us always!
God Bless everyone!
