Well, the second opinion has come and gone these past 2 weeks. Had a Pathologist from a different hospital read the slides from the needle biopsy, and conferred with a surgon and endocrinologist there--they think there is only a 10 per cent chance that it is cancer, and said there would not advise surgery, but a "watch and wait" policy, and have ultra sound tests each 6 months to see if it grows.
The bottom line is there is really no way outside of surgery to tell if it is a Follicular cancer. When I ask why would I take this chance, the answer is that the percentages are about the same for something going wrong in surgery (I think--got to check that to be sure.)
Anyway, just updating you. I'm getting a third opinion also, but cannot see the guy until in November. Meantime, have sent my slides on down to their hospital at U. of Chicago.
I still don't know what I want to do. But I really do hate waiting! _________________

Margaret - as much as you hate waiting to get to the third opinion - at least neither doc one or doc two - said IMMEDIATE SURGERY was the way to go. A diagnosis that at least has a wait and see option has the potential for the most positive outcome...rushing into surgery is usually an indicator of the worst possible outcome. You know me...I try to see the glass as half full...a positive perspective will do you more good while you are waiting. I'll continue to keep you in my prayers... _________________

That's GOOD news, Margaret. Both doctors have recommended the wait and watch philosophy which, as Mary wrote, means there's no immediacy for doing anything. I am, however, very happy to learn that your third opinion will be gotten at a teaching hospital. We have Barnes here which is affiliated with Washington University and, when there's any doubt, patients are sent there. For some reason, those facilities just seem to have all the up-to-date information.
My prayers remain with you. I know how difficult the waiting is. Went through that when my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer 15 years ago. Just stay close to the boards and fill those empty minutes by writing to your woofmang friends. _________________
