My wife and I just came back from a very nice Las Vegas New Years vacation. The last time we went about 5 years ago I still smoked of course, and I was pleased at all the places where you could light up and not offend anyone.
This time was a different story though. I was not tempted in anyway to smoke, but I was repulsed by the smoke everywhere. I got the smell of smoke on me in casinos and even restaurants allow smoking as do all bars.
I'm so spoiled living in Delaware where smoking is banned in all public places indoors including bars and restaurants.
Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone has a great year! _________________

Happy New Year to you too! And don't be too hard on Vegas - the smokers have to have a haven too. We've all been there! |

Hi Frankie! Happy Luniversary, by the way. you're getting quite "old" ha ha.
I just got through reading my NY Times, and there was quite an article in the New Jersey section about the new law going into effect all over the state for no smoking in bars, restaurants, etc.
HOWEVER, the big casinos bosses (and I assume cousins of the Soprano's) have been able to get an exemption to the no smoking rule in the parts of the casinos where there is gambling. So, the businesses that have food and drink but no gambling suffer, but not the casinos. that really stinks.
In New York, they were able to get around this by having the law ban smoking not in certain types of businesses, but anywhere there are employees. SO...if you have a restaurant, and it has employees, even in the kitchen...NO SMOKING ALLOWED IN THE BUILDING.
At first, I hated this law, but now that I've quit I'm glad for it. We went to Mr. Bill's company Christmas party the other night (a little late if you ask me), at a small bar/restaurant, that was closed to the public for the night for the party. With this new law, even then they can't allow smoking, and all the smokers had to go outside in the cold to smoke. I didn't miss it at all.
The smell is so repulsive to me now that it's hard to be around anyone smoking or in a room with anyone smoking. I now understand what non smokers were talking about. When I smoked....I just couldn't smell it like they did...and didn't care anyway!
eventually, it'll be a non smoking world, and you'll have to pay a small fortune and be in solitary isolation if you want to smoke. they have even talked about banning smoking OUTSIDE in NY City....which makes me laugh because you can hardly breathe from the stench of the cars and buses anyway. It would be even funnier in New Jersey.....toxic wasteland of the north east!
I know I'm going to catch some flack on this! Fire away. _________________

Happy New Year to You
I live in Vegas, and believe me this city gets an F rating on promoting NO SMOKING......
We do not go out much, but when we do, it sure confirms and strengthens my quit when I smell the smokers and see that cancer stick hanging out of their mouths...that used to be me.....
A big happy lunaversary to you

Thanks for all the replies from my long time friends and quitters. Hey, no put down on smokers, I used to be one for a long, long time.
Pamela, I agree that the New Jersey ban is half-assed, but at least it's a start.
Nevada Pam. It don't take long to get away from the smoke. We took a short ride over to the Red Rocks canyon on Sunday before we left town and found the great outdoors. My wife wants to move out there.
I told her we need to come back in July and see what it's like (hehehe).
We also found a nice place in Henderson called Sunset Station that we were able to kill a couple of hours before the flight back.
Still, we had a great time and it sucked coming back to work. I have the most stressful job. It would make air traffic controllers and heart surgeons cringe. I'd tell you what it is, but then, I'd have to kill you!
Regards,

Frank, Happy Lunaversary! I have not been to Vegas in many years now, but I remember I liked it then because I COULD smoke, but I would not like it now! Smoke has become so repulsive to me, I cannot go into restaurants that allow it at all, even if they have a no-smoking section....the smoke seems to just blow on over!
I would like to go out west and see more of the country than just Vegas. Many people seem to like it there so much. I'm such a city person now, however....hmmmm....still, I would like to see it.
THank you for sharing your trip with us! That makes it fun for us, too! _________________

Frankie,
Dover Downs by you has no smoking in their cansino but all they have are slots and race cars. Also, Charles Town, WV has no smoking sections in the slot machine cansino. Charles Town has the horse racing too. Just in case all you want to do is play some slots some time.

I was just at Mountaineer Casino in WV for a four day work conference and I was very surprised at the intensity of the cigarette smoke - it hit you in the face at the hotel door. Even my "non-smoking" hotel room had a smoky smell. I'm not all that repulsed by the smell...now and then I still think it smells good - but it was pretty awful after a day or two.
There were moments when I questioned exactly why I couldn't smoke too...and after a two or three drinks...it got more and more tempting...which is utter craziness...so I stopped drinking more than one. It was a great conference - but it would have been better without the smoke. I was struggling with being faced with buffets - breakfast, lunch and supper and an afternoon snack... I struggled trying to make good food choices and watch portions...UGH!! I was at the gym every morning at 5:45am for 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer...which helped... especially since there is no way I could have exercised at that intensity for 30 minutes as a smoker...
Guess this is another success story to add to the arsenal of "I made it through without smoking" experiences...I am stronger than this addiction...so I'll keep taking it one day at a time... _________________
