Hi all: Since I have now been 1.5 months into hospital stays with my sister who has advanced COPD from smoking - I have learned some things that help her and I have been doing them and they help me too.

Drink several cups of coffee daily - drink it hot as you can - helps break up mucus. No milk or sugar - just black will do. Coffee works better than tea.

Use wet heat (like in the shower) a lot and often - if you do not want a whole shower then just heat up a pan of water and steam up your nose and down your throat. I put a towel over my head when I do this and just get my face close to the pan of hot water and breath it in. This also does wonders for my skin. Not the same as a vaporizer - need face to be close to steam and just water - nothing in it.

Steam face or bath in the evening if you can - opens up stuff so you breath better while sleeping.

Cough even when you do not need to. Short spitting out coughs are great and of course remember to keep pursing your lips and blow out often.

Wrap your head and ears in a hot towel from the dryer - talk about a good feeling. I now even get out of the shower - towel dry hair - and then wrap in hot towel and I can breath so good. It makes the conditioner go into the hair too!

When you feel tightness in the chest - cough and stretch arms to the sky. Lay on back and bend knees up to chest as high as you can.

My sis is sooooooooooo much better - learning to talk with trach now - eating soft foods - walking with oxygen tank on wheels - coughing up stuff throuh hole in trach and cleaning trach herself..........we are so thankful for all the well wishes and prayers she and we have received and have every hope she will be able to go home soon to finsih her rehab. Cheers! Mardi

Mardi,

I believe I'll try some of your tips. I like the idea of a warm towel...and breathing deep! Love to breathe deeply.

You're a great sister for helping and being there for her. That in itself is worth so much to one who is sick. That is love! Especially over such a long period of time. Hope your sister continues to improve quickly and adjust.

Take care of you and hug your sis for me.

Love and Hugs
