|
|
i've been getting the question, "how do i make a picture appear beneath my username?" a lot lately, so i figured it was time to do a tutorial.
- go to your profile (there's a link that says "profile" near the top of every page of the site)
- scroll all the way to the bottom of the profile page, where you'll find the "Avatar control panel"
- to use your own picture as your avatar, follow the instructions in the following thread (NOTE: offsite avatars are limited to 80 pixels on a side. if yours is larger than this, it will be automatically resized by the forum software):
http://quit-smoking-support.woofmang.com/viewtopic.php?t=814
- to use one of the "built-in" avatars:
- click the "Show gallery" button next to the line that says, "Select Avatar from gallery:" (NOTE: there are nearly 600 avatars available, so the gallery page will take a while to completely load)
- scroll through the gallery and find an avatar that you'd like to use
- click the button *below* the avatar
- scroll to the bottom of the page
- click "Select avatar" (this will take you back to your profile page)
- scroll to the bottom of your profile page and click "Submit"
- you're done!

files on your local computer aren't accessible over the internet, imagen; the image you want to use has to be on a publicly-accessible server in order for this to work.
take a look at the instructions in the topic i linked to, above; they'll explain exactly what you need to do. _________________

first of all, congratulations, barbara - you got it!
now, if you use the image as your avatar (see the post i linked to, above, about posting images, for instructions), the forum software will automatically resize it for display. but that won't change the actual size of the image.
to change the actual size of the image, you can use the program "paint" that comes with windows (look in "help and support" in the start menu to find out how to find it). once you get your image opened in paint, go to the 'image' menu and choose 'stretch and skew'. under 'stretch', choose a number less than 100% (it'll probably work best if you choose the same number for both boxes), then use 'save as' on the 'file' menu to save it with a new name (this way, you'll have both the large and small versions). then upload it and use it wherever you like. _________________

Thanks Kevin,
I will fool with it again when I have the brain and time to do it.

I've tried to use an avatar from the site gallery but even after submitting when I return to my profile the image or the box with ? in it is gone. It isn't a big concern that I dont have an avatar, just wanted to let you know that maybe there are technical difficulties. Thanks, Julie |

Kevin,
I also tried to us an avatar that is provided by this site, picked one, went into my profile, downloaded the avatar list, clicked the button below my selected avatar , went to bottom of page hit select, then clicked submit on my profile page. No image on my profile page, just a red X in the image box.
What am I doing wrong?

it sounds like you did everything right, genny - let me take a look at it and see if there's something broken. _________________

no, genny, the problem is with my programming - i fixed the avatar thing, but i can't take the time right now to track down the problem with the quit date, so we'll just have to live with resetting that whenever we change our avatars for a while... _________________
