Hello all.....this is weird...I cannot sign in often as I do it from my job and I do not have computer at home working. I noticed as I signed in today that the previous time I signed in was Jan 7th at 3:43 pm and today I signed in March 7th at 3:43 pm. Now I could not have accomplished that if I had tried. I hope you are all well. We have had 3 months of awful weather and the flu epidemic here in OK City and I have managed to stay sick most of the 3 months but still have not had to be hospitalized like always happened prior to my quit. I have no desire to start (cigs)again and have moved my lifestyle a lot to avoid people who smoke in my face and places that are laden with smoke. I miss my friends at the local pub - but they call and we see each other outside of pub. I am hopeful that law will make it here in Ok to ban smoking in clubs/pubs. Everytime I went - I became ill again. Watch out for that second hand smoke. I found this article and wish to share it with those of you who may have missed it. I have asthma and copd and all because of smoking so many years. Last time I was in the hospital - I became ill after a party at a local pub - smoking allowed - I was in the hospital for a week.......last Jan (2007) my older sis (died) and was brought back by only a miracle (3-4 months in hospital) and she is still having many problems but still if off the smokes............Mardi

Hope you are all well - let's all look for spring to spring soon...yeah flowers!

Smoky bar triggered deadly asthma attack - US study

Last Updated: 2008-02-11 10:00:24 -0400 (Reuters Health)

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A woman in her late teens died from an acute asthma attack triggered by secondhand cigarette smoke shortly after arriving at her job as a waitress in a bar in Michigan, researchers reported on Friday.

They said it was the first reported case of an immediate death caused by secondhand smoke.

"She didn't have any other possible known causes of death," said Dr. Kenneth Rosenman, a Michigan State University professor who oversees three state public health surveillance systems.

Cigarette smoke is known to trigger acute asthma attacks.

"We know that particulate levels from secondhand cigarette smoke in bars like this reach sufficient levels to set off an asthma attack," Rosenman said.

He said the woman was a student who had a job at a fast-food restaurant, and worked a second job as a waitress at the bar. "She was perfectly fine when she went to work," Rosenman said in a telephone interview.

"After about 15 minutes, she had an acute asthma attack and collapsed on the floor. The autopsy clearly indicates she died from asthma," said Rosenman, who would not disclose the woman's name or the precise place and time of her death for privacy reasons.

Rosenman said the woman had asthma since age 2. Her asthma was poorly controlled.

She had made four visits to her doctor in the year before her death for flare-ups, and had been treated in a hospital emergency department two to three times that year.

Although she had prescriptions for an assortment of drugs to prevent and treat asthma attacks, she was reported to only use them when she was having breathing difficulty.

On the evening of her death, she had no inhaler with her. When she became sick, she told the bar manager she needed to go to the hospital, then collapsed on the dance floor.

Bar patrons offered an inhaler and the woman tried to use it, but could not. Emergency response workers were unable to revive her and she died shortly thereafter.

Rosenman, who wrote about the case in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, said 24 U.S. states prohibit smoking in public places such as bars. A number of other states, including Michigan, are considering it.

He said a smoking ban could prevent future deaths.

Secondhand smoke causes about 3,400 lung cancer deaths and 46,000 heart disease deaths in adult non-smokers in the United States each year, according to the American Lung Association.

"There are a lot of statistics out there about secondhand smoke. Here is a human face. She died acutely. It is a tragic death," Rosenman said.

The study was funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

great to see you, mardi - glad things are going well for you (i.e., sick, but not hospitalized) and glad your sister is still off the cigs, too.

and that's a tragic story; my heart goes out to her family...

hi Mardi! Good to see you - glad you could stop by. That is a really scary story - thanks for sharing - what a waste of a young life. You would think someone with asthma wouldn't want to work in a smokey environment - but then again - the tips in bars might be enough to make the job appealing. That's a very sad story - but there is hope! The laws ar changing all the time.

Take care - try to stay healthy - I know you will stay smoke-free. Keep it going!

Hi Mardi - good to dear from you! Smoking has been banned from bars and restaurants for a long time here in NY. There's even talk of banning smoking on the STREETS in NYC, but I don't think that would go anywhere...the addicts would finally riot.

When I was a smoker, i thought the smoking ban laws were horrible...unconstitutional...etc. blah blah blah.

Now I know that was just Scowling Demon the inner junky with another stupid justification for smoking.

Now, as a non smoker, it's much easier here in NY...there are so few places you run into it, unless you deliberately try. I still have to hold my breath outside lots of public places (restaurants, banks, supermarket) because all the smokers are hudling there puffing away like mad to feed the junkie......but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be!

Hang in there, and glad you came back to see us!
