Well, there was a happy ending to this story. I got a letter from the credit card company which stated that I had a zero balance. I do believe there is nothing like doing it in writing - harder to ignore. So, they did waive the fee.
Funny thing was, it was a form letter I received from them. At the bottom it said "did you know you can pay your monthly bill online?" I had to laugh since that is what started this mess in the first place. Live and learn.
