So we're going to the lake. This is typically a drinking environment, & therefore high smoking environment. I've already cut my drinking down to almost nothing (well before ever deciding to quit smoking), but I'm afraid to have even a single drink. But even without a drink, it's just a place where normally I'm sitting on an island, relaxing, talking, and smoking & smoking. I'm worried about getting through this weekend in an environment when I normally would look like a chimney... especially just a week into this...
Any suggestions? |

hmmm....
I didnt drink at all at first.
Then I drank, only at home and I would drink
vodka and juice instead of my normal rum and diet coke
Its going to be rough this early in your quit, but if you really
really want to- you will do it. take straws to chew on?
Think about how hard the first few days were, do you really
want to go through that again?
edited to say: if your real worried, dont go yet. _________________

Keep a list of your reasons for quitting close at hand - and step aside and read them out loud to yourself (yes you might look a little silly) - but that should reinforce your desire to be free and remind yourself you are a nicotine addict -and there is no such thing as "just one"....think past the lighting up - think to how you will feel when its done...and acknowledge that with even "just one" - as soon as it is done - the wanting another will set it.... think about how you'll feel if your throw away your quit like its a piece of trash - and not something you treasure and worked hard for. Think about having to tell someone who is proud of your quitting - who really matters - that you smoked. Have a plan! See yourself finishing the weekend and being able to proudly say - "I didn't smoke". Maybe dangle a little reward if you stay free - maybe take something else you can do with your hands - knitting, crocheting, a book of puzzles, a sketch pad and pencils. Build a sand castle....see yourself being successful and keeping your quit... - don't say what you "won't" do - say what you WILL do - "I will say no thanks - I quit". Tell yourself - I will go blow bubbles when everyone esle is smoking.... I will take a short walk and breath in fresh air....
Recognize the dangers - they are real - but believe you CAN do it!! _________________

Thanks Mary. Those were some helpful suggestions. If I'm going to be successful with getting through the weekend nicotine free, I'm going to have to PLAN for the events that will trigger me.
Tomorrow will be my day 7. |

realize this, virginia: if you choose to smoke this weekend, it won't be because you're drinking, it won't be because of your environment, and it won't be because you're only a week into this quit.
it'll be because you chose to smoke.
just like it always was. just like it'll always be. no excuses. you always get to choose.
i'd suggest you choose life.
btw: you can do this. it's independence day; choose life and celebrate your freedom.

Remember - When everyone else lights up a smoke it's not becuase they want to. You get to CHOOSE what to do!
You do not HAVE to smoke. You do not HAVE to spend $5 EVERY DAY.
Protip: go for a swim if the crave gets to bad.

I made it. And there were plenty of challenging situations.
But I made it.
I have been quit for 1 Week, 2 Days, 2 hours, 40 minutes and 23 seconds (9 days). I have saved $61.49 by not smoking 182 cigarettes. I have saved 15 hours and 10 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 6/25/2009 10:00 PM |
