well, I was due to repeat my breathing tests and just knew I was going to pass them by the hair of my chinny chin chin but it was not to be...I was finally told I had moderate COPD...not what I wanted to hear..dag burn it I told the doctor..... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes I don't know why it threw me to hear the words...he just left it unsaid but we both knew...I knew deep down I guess but was hoping all the same to escape it. I am coming up on my fifth year of being smoke free and had alot of numbers in the red...did not call any specifics but I was retaining some air in the sacs of the lung...some air was showing to be trapped.

The funny thing is, I never once thought about throwing in the towel and saying " oh what the hell...give me a smoke."...never even entered my mind...I was sad for a couple of days but then got up pulled up my boot straps and said.." well, you don't have this ole gal yet!" so I exercised and went on with my day.

To all those who are trying to quit or just thinking about trying to quit.....please take the plunge...life is too short to spend t on oxygen...kick ole Laughing Demon out today.
Kay

Oh Kay, I'm sorry to hear that bit of bad news, but happy you are not letting it drive you back to ole Laughing Demon Can I ask just why you had this test? Were you having any particular problems or is it routine with your doc? Mine has never said much about my quit except a good for you comment. No tests have been done and I really have no complaints. Hope all goes well for you! Keep us posted. Smile

Hey Kay - sorry to hear the diagnosis. Please keep doing everything you can to keep every bit of lung capacity you DO have! What are your treatment options? What can you do to prevent further damage? You certainly postponed the diagnosis with quitting - imagine if you'd kept smoking? You are coming up on 5 - and that's a celebration for sure! You have a lot of living left to do...don't let it get you down!! Attitude counts!

Essie, this doctor is a pulmonary specialist who cared for my parents who both passed from lung complications...he has ordered these tests 3 times, cat scans and been down to look with a light in the past 9 years...he has watched me very closely...I have been taking preventive inhalers for COPD, along with azmacort to help keep the passages open. I had shortness of breath on hills and with exertion....he picked up on it walking down a hospital corridor when he was treating my Dad...that is when he took me under his wing.

Mary, he will continue to monitor me....I will continue to take the inhalers along with allegra to help with allergies and report any changes to him...I have to say I am very lucky...he gave me his home phone, pager, cell and direct office number along time a go...we bonded when he was taking care of my mother...he brought me coffee to the ICU waiting room and the other families thought he was my husband... Laughing Laughing I will claim him as a very special friend.. He called me one Sunday morning around 4:30 a.m. when he wanted to take my mother off the ventilator...hubby answered the phone and the doctor asked for me....after I hung up, hubby wanted to know who had called....he said doctors do not call patients at home like that anymore and I told him this one does...needless to say hubby uses him as his intern too. Laughing

Sorry to hear the diagnosis, I'm hopeful that I have quit in time to avoid serious damage but who knows only time will tell.

My father in law has emphysema and must take an oxygen bottle with him a every where, he only quit when he was diagnosed and a couple of weeks ago he asked me if I still smoked, I replied no nearly a year quit and he was so glad. His condition helped me maintain focus at some points during my own quit, I didn't want to end up like him, not a nice thing to say but true none the less.

I do hope that the reduced lung capacity does not impact too heavily on your enjoyment of life and I am so pleased that you are not tempted to go back to the evil weed.

I feel quit angry knowing that governments around the world continue to allow the sale of tobacco products. We are now fully aware of the problems smoking causes and I feel that we should have been phasing out the sale of tobacco for years. By not doing so I consider that we are failing future generations some of whom will become smokers and die from smoking related illness.

Thanks Kay for responding. I wish I had such a compassionate doctor. I was afraid mine may be missing something I wasn't aware of. Since he just retired I will see what the next one says.

No, you didn't sound like a whining whimp or anything like that to me. You know we are all in the same boat here, done our damage to ourselves with all those years of smoking so now our job is to share our experiences and hopefully help each other. Take care of you! {{{{Hugs}}}}

Nic, I am sorry to hear about your father in law...you are smart to quit while you are young...I wish I had. I smoked for 38 years but never smoked over a pack a day so those who think they are safe because John Doe smoked 2 or more...well, I just busted your bubble.

The doctor did not change anything that we were already doing...did not add anything new....just was going over the report and used the word COPD for the first time....so I asked him point blank....and got a yes...I could tell he did not want to tell me that....

That is why I wanted it understood I was not being wimpy...I am still feeling the same as always...shortness of breath on stairs and exertion....but I can still do what I want...I may just heave somewhat at the end... Laughing Laughing I was sick so much with bronchitis as a child probably from all the second hand smoke....my damage has been a long time coming ...the lungs were probably somewhat damaged before I ever smoked myself from all the second hand smoke I inhaled but then who knew about that way back then....it does not matter, I would have been in the same boat from the first day I chose to smoke. I wish I had known what I was getting into....and I truly hope it helps someone else to quit.
Kay

Oh, Kay. I know this news is such a disappointment. I am so happy to hear that your quit is strong and this kind of news doesn't change your outlook and resolve. I will be thinking of you.

I think it was just the shock of having to accept it...sorta like just before i hit the ground when that little mustang threw me...I knew it was coming but it sure did not help me much when I hit the ground...it hurt like hell but then finally I rode again....I am already back on the treadmill and other eq. I will be as strong as I can be to slay yet another dragon....geez, where do the keep coming from???? Laughing

Hi Cow girl…it has been a very long time from my last visit. I read this thread with interest. I too was told a year ago…maybe longer I had signs of COPD. Like you I lived in a house with two smoking parents. And every one else…smoking was cool back then. Six months ago they found a spot on my lung. I had a cat scan and found out it might be a scar from my childhood. I had histoplasmosis…wish I would have known that years ago before I started smoking. They are going to do a follow up CAT scan on my lung next month.

I related to your post feeling like darn…I wish I would have had a better report from the Dr. I guess I too didn’t quit soon enough. I feel I will grab some of your courage and pull the boot straps up and get-r-back to liven.
