Just wanted to share the lyrics of a song that I absolutely love. It is about true friendship and being there for someone in hard times. On a spiritual note, the second "I" voice could be that of God. What do you think? ...written and performed by my favourite music artist/story teller of all time. A very spiritual and talented singer/song-writer. I'll let you guess who it is---hint: he wrote "I'm a Believer" for The Monkeys. This song is called "Captain Of A Shipwreck"

I was lost until you found me
You're the reason for my today
Was tempest tossed, now I sleep soundly
Thanks to you I gladly say

That if your goldmine comes up empty
I'll be there to work the claim
If you're a captain of a shipwreck
I'll be first mate to your shame

Trust in me to share your burden
Stand by you where I belong
When life brings the day uncertain
I will soothe you with my song

And if your goldmine comes up empty
I'll be there to work the claim
If you're a captain of a shipwreck
I'll be first mate to your shame

Fear no flood in stormy weather
Fear no fire if winds arise
Flesh and blood, I'm yours forever
And forever, it never dies

And if your goldmine comes up empty
I'll be there to work the claim
If you're a captain of a shipwreck
I'll be first mate to your shame

If you're a captain of a shipwreck
You can find me up on the top deck
You'll be captain of a shipwreck
I'll be first mate to your shame.
I was lost until you found me
You're the reason for my today
Was tempest tossed, now I sleep soundly
Thanks to you I gladly say

That if your goldmine comes up empty
I'll be there to work the claim
If you're a captain of a shipwreck
I'll be first mate to your shame

Trust in me to share your burden
Stand by you where I belong
When life brings the day uncertain
I will soothe you with my song

And if your goldmine comes up empty
I'll be there to work the claim
If you're a captain of a shipwreck
I'll be first mate to your shame

Fear no flood in stormy weather
Fear no fire if winds arise
Flesh and blood, I'm yours forever
And forever, it never dies

And if your goldmine comes up empty
I'll be there to work the claim
If you're a captain of a shipwreck
I'll be first mate to your shame

If you're a captain of a shipwreck
You can find me up on the top deck
You'll be captain of a shipwreck
I'll be first mate to your shame.

I like it! Not sure if I've ever "heard it" - I can't even guess the song writer... I'll be watching for the answer!

Hi Mary, I have this song on my i-pod as well as many others by this artist. Four years ago, my son got into trouble at school. It was serious...he was suspended for 20 days which is the max. suspension. He is not a bad kid, he just made a poor choice as children often do. The suspension itself we could handle. I just went on leave from work and tutored him at home. The worst was the fact that he became stigmatized--marked as trouble, stay away type thing. He lost all his friends. Not one of his 'so-called' friends called on him and he was excluded from trick-or-treating with them. I felt his pain through all this being a mom and wanting to just take the burden of his suffering all on myself. I would go for walks and listen to this song over and over again, and it touched me and helped me be strong and supportive of him through the whole ordeal.

Anyway, I just rediscovered this song recently and thought about how true friendship is hard to find and I thought a really good measure of a true friend should be someone who stands by you in good times and in bad, but especially bad times. That is the measure. Those who abandon you in your hour of need you can do without them in your life because they were never really your friends to begin with. What do you think?

P.S. hint #2 for identity of artist---This artist had a last tour a few years ago and one of his concerts was at the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh (August 18, 2008). I was there and it was phenomenal.

What a beautiful song. I'd love to hear it sung and, yes, I agree that the responding "I" is God. Can't imagine who the artist is, though.

I so feel for you and your son. Going through trials with our children is tougher than having something happen to us. Sure hope he has progressed and is doing well now. "Time heals all wounds."

Yes, head up kiddo...shoulders back and look them in the eye.....oh, and make better choices from now on....we have all had to cross bridges that were a bit unsteady...best of luck.

Neil Diamond...
I'm pretty sure I went to the same concert - August 2008 - that was the summer I came back from Iraq - and the concert was my birthday present to myself...floor seats...he is an amazing artist and a great performer!
