Just a quick update to let y'all know what is going on.
I saw the pulmonolgist yesterday for the first time. He is very nice, very smart and seems to have a good handle on things. I do have COPD and chronic bronchitis. My ENT did not tell me everything, like I suspected.
My chest xray showed a calcified granuloma in the upper left lung. The doc said this was from a previous infection. The PFTs did not come back "normal" as my ENT said. They actually show an upper thorax obstruction. He said he needs more testing to determine for sure but he thinks that I have asthma. He also is concerned about my pulmonary status and ordered me to get an echocardiogram done tomorrow. I have to go for a methacholine challenge test next Wednesday (that doesn't make me happy, because they attempt to induce an asthma attack) and start using an Advair inhaler in addition to the Singulair I take for my allergies.
He also said my allergy situation will HAVE to be addressed. More than likely this means I am going to have to have a septoplasty, sinus windows and my tonsils and adenoids out. I will also have to have allergy shorts.
Eventually however, I should be able to breathe through my nose and not feel so constricted in my chest.
The PA asked me why I quit smoking. I said because I didn't want to die. The Doctor said quitting was the best thing I ever did.
Prayers are appreciated and all in all I am a little nervous but just grateful that I don't have lung cancer or something worse. |

Hi Sarah, good to hear from you. you lost me a little with the medical jargon....but I guess in short...it's not great news, but could be worse news? Not meaning to simplify your medical issues too much!
I'm surprised they had to ask why you quit smoking. you may or may not be able to reverse what's already happening with your lungs and breathing....but it's good that you are not making it worse by smoking.
But, gosh, what a lot for you to have to deal with and go through. Remember the good old days, when you had one doctor who did it all? And, came to the house too?
If it'll help I'm all for it...pain in the neck or otherwise. I hope you get some answers, and some relief as well.
In the meantime, it's really good to hear from you....keep us informed, and post more often if you can! _________________

Hi Sarah, your doctor sounds alot like mine....if I go in and he spots anything at all, he turns serious and starts ordering this test and that test....hopefully, your results will all come back good. Mine went down my nose into my lungs with a light to see "what was going on" the results were good no party that day .
What I am rattling about is that a good doctor will move quick to check everything possible so he can rule it out....your results is your concern not the tests themselves....prayers are with you anyway....

Sarah,
Sounds like you've got a great doc that really knows what he is doing! I have COPD also, and allergies, but not asthma. I had a bunch of tests, but they didn't seem too bad. I was doing the Inhalers Advair and Spiriva, but not doing them now. Getting a Stress test, too, ordered by the Pulmonologist in March.
Quitting smoking is he best thing we both ever did.
Keep us posted. Thinking of you.

Thank you so much everyone for your support, it is invaluable to me.
I had my Echocardiogram done on Friday and it came back NORMAL!!! I am thrilled to say the least.
I had to reschedule the methocholine challenge for Monday as I was having trouble breathing the day of the test.
Again thank you for the well wishes and prayers!! |
