here's the text of an email i got this morning from the campaign for tobacco-free kids. please click the link in the 2nd paragraph; it will take you t a form you can fill out that will send a letter to the president and the us attorney general and automatically cc: your representatives in congress (and you'll be given an opportunity to make a donation to help the campaign):
----
What we have feared for the last five years happened late yesterday in the historic Department of Justice lawsuit against Big Tobacco. With help from their political allies in the Bush Administration, the tobacco companies appear closer than ever to achieving their goal - a weak outcome that allows the industry to continue its deadly business as usual.
Please click here to take action today: http://tfk.grassroots.com/DOJ_605/DOJ060805/ Help us pressure the Administration to protect our kids, not Big Tobacco.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is presenting its closing arguments this week. But instead of going all out to stop the industry's harmful practices, the DOJ is backing off some of the most important reforms.
In the most alarming change, the government yesterday called for a completely inadequate program to help the nation's 45 million smokers quit. The government's own expert witness, Dr. Michael Fiore of the University of Wisconsin, called for a 25-year, $130 billion smoking cessation program. But the government asked for only $10 billion over five years - less than eight percent of what its own expert said is needed.
Why is the government pulling its punches at the last minute? This morning, The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times reported that a top Justice Department official who used to work for a law firm that represented RJ Reynolds pressured the Justice Department lawyers to give Big Tobacco a break. The LA Times reports:
"A person familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the change was 'forced on the [lawyers] by higher-level, politically appointed officials of the Justice Department,' including Associate [Attorney General] Robert McCallum, who oversees the civil division."
There you have it. The Bush Administration is overstepping its bounds once more and protecting Big Tobacco's bottom line instead of our health and kids. Last time this Administration tried to interfere with the case, we launched DontPardonBigTobacco.org and thousands of you flooded the White House and the Justice Department with emails and faxes. Thanks to all your efforts, the White House backed down and let the case go to trial.
Now we need your help again! Please click here: http://tfk.grassroots.com/DOJ_605/DOJ060805/ to contact the White House and the Justice Department. Urge them to listen to their own expert witnesses and hold Big Tobacco fully accountable for all their misdeeds.
By reducing their demands, the DOJ looks like they may be stepping up to the bargaining table to settle this case rather than let Judge Gladys Kessler rule. We need to pressure the Government not to back down. America's government needs to stand with its citizens, not with an industry that has addicted 45 million people to their deadly product and is working hard every day to addict the next generation of smokers.
This new development makes the filing of our Amicus ("friend of the court") brief even more important. If the government isn't going to tell Judge Kessler what are the most effective reforms to stop Big Tobacco's harmful practices, it's more important than ever that the public health community step up to the plate and do so. That's what our brief is all about.
Thank you for taking action today. I will be in touch in the next 24 hours to keep you up-to-date on the many developments in this case and how you can help out. You can likely expect to hear from me a few more times before this week is over. Everyone at the Campaign appreciates all your hard work and dedication.
Sincerely,
Carter Headrick
