Hi everybody, I was at my doctor office last night for something un-related, but since I had a slight cough and since I used to smoke my doctor measured my lung strength/capacity by having me breath hard several times into a device. The outcome was not good. I was told that I should have 'blown' a 400 and I was at 250. Does anybody know of any lung exercises I can do to help my lung function increase? Barb (The Crave-inator) |

Bar,
I am sorry about the outcome of your breathing capacity...
My husband had to do breathing exercises after his lung collapsed.
He used a incentive spirometer, (got this from the doctor) deep breath in and push the air out through the spirometer.... Also he did the chest push ups....Lying flat on the floor and palms flat, pushing himself up so his chest rises....breathing as deep as he can while doing this, expanding his lungs then as he lowers himself to the floor, he pushes out the air....walking and deep breathing and pushing the air out, also helped to expand the lungs.
I do not know if this will help, but maybe your doctor can give you some exercises....
I wish you the best,

any type of aerobic activity that raises your respiration rate (walking, jogging, running, riding a bike, etc.) will help increase lung capacity and function. of course, you may want to talk with your doctor, too... _________________

Hello Kevin & Pam, When I first asked my doctor if there were any new exercises I could add to my routine to inprove my breathing she said that my regular routine of running and arobics is good and said I should come in to repeat the test in 6 months.
I called my doctor this morning and asked about a spirometer. She said that it couldn't hurt so I went online and ordered one. I agree that it can't hurt and I want to do something specifically for my lungs.
Thanks for the input and advice.

Blow up a balloon it is cheap and easy. Aerobics is a good idea as well but most important breath in through your nose till your bottom tummy is full of air then exhale slowly through your mouth till yuor belly is sucked right in. Most people only ever use the top portion of their lungs as they have been shallow breathers for years. Breath deep your lungs have no choice but to expand. _________________
