|
|
It may just be my little corner of the world, but man, I have seen more men out on the street smoking cigars than ever. Yesterday I was out and I could smell it. Finally I saw the man ahead of me. I literally had to decide whether to walk faster or stop and cross the street. I love my east coast, but I am beginning to think that I may have to move to California before too long!
And, another rant....our local Army Post just opened a cigar shop. I am so flipping mad. As a family member of the reserve military community I am disgusted at their hypocritical attitude toward smoking. The entire military community has been progressive and aggressive with smoking cessation programs. Then, to allow a cigar vendor to open on post is simply horrendous.

I wish my state would ban public smoking but I think it'll be a long time coming being the capital of Phillip Morris USA.

The sad thing is, is that these guys are fooling themselves thinking that, "Well, it's not a cigarette" and since they're not inhaling, they believe it's "safer" than cigarettes. My brother, who was a cigarette smoker is caught up in that lie as we speak. Of course, when we bring it up and inform him, this is no different than smoking cigarttes, he gives the "Yeah, whatever...." excuse and goes about his business. He's in great physical shape, and he cares about his body. I don't know what's going to have to happen to make him stop. He stoped cigarettes because he was a runner and couldn't breathe....Apparently, he does fine without inhaling cigar smoke, but doesn't get that the nicotine still invades the body... _________________

There are times when I'll check a whiff of pipe smoke...and it always makes me think of my dad...
Cigars...not as nostalgic as pipe smoke - and my addict brain tried really hard to convince me it wasn't the same when someone offered my a cigar - but nicotine is nicotine is nicotine....and I'm an addict...so none of that for me.... _________________

If there's anything with a more foul smell than cigarettes, it's cigars. YUK! _________________

That's really a shame, Alleghany. I'm sure Nita's observation is right. These kids think that because they aren't inhaling, there's no problem, but they are putting themselves at risk for mouth cancers (and perhaps other cancers) as well as addicting themselves to nicotine. I don't know much about military base life -- what other kinds of businesses do they allow to operate on bases? It sure is sad that they would allow a business hawking harmful products to hang out a shingle.
All my best,

My grandmother started smoking because while she was rationing sugar and flour in a family of fourteen, the tobacco industry was handing out free cigarettes for the war relief effort. The boys would come home with hundreds of packs of cigarettes and they all started smoking before the age of 12 - and my grandma just took it up too. All part of supporting our troops at one point in history.
I have a picture of her in a hospital bed, dying of cancer, smoking a cigarette (in a HOSPITAL!) and reading a jacqueline suzette novel. Thank you uncle sam and hollywood - you made it so patriotic and glamorous. |

The cigar smoking is booming in my part of the world too. Inlive in a military community here in Japan. The commisaaries are actually stopping in their sales of tobacco, but the post exchanges are doing a booming business. The exhachanges have increased the choice of brands of cigars. I spoke to a friend who quit smoking about a year and half ago and he started smoking cigars, his coometns to me "cigars aren't dangerous like cigarettes". Oh Nita, you are so right. I guess it is all the best for our fightning men and women .
