Hey Everybody,

Those of you who live and can vote in the states listed below have a great opportunity to vote against big tobacco. Here's the information from the American Lung Association:

Ballot Initiatives on Tuesday November 7
On November 7, voters in an unprecedented seven states – Arizona, California, Florida, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio and South Dakota – will get the chance to weigh-in on important ballot initiatives to provide smokefree workplaces, increase tobacco taxes and fund comprehensive tobacco prevention programs. Here is a rundown of the initiatives:

Arizona:

Proposition 201 – would prohibit smoking in almost all public places and workplaces, including restaurants and bars, supported by the American Lung Association and other public health groups. The American Lung Association Strongly Supports Proposition 201;
Proposition 203 – would increase the cigarette tax by $0.80 per pack. The American Lung Association Strongly Supports Proposition 203;
Proposition 206 – tobacco-industry sponsored initiative that would continue to allow smoking in many workplaces, and preempt all local ordinances. The American Lung Association Strongly Opposes Proposition 206.

California:

Proposition 86 – would increase the cigarette tax by $2.60 to $3.47 per pack and provide additional funding for its successful state tobacco prevention program. The American Lung Association Strongly Supports Proposition 86.

Florida:

Amendment 4 – would dedicate 15 percent of the tobacco settlement money to tobacco prevention programs. The American Lung Association Strongly Supports Amendment 4.

Missouri:

Amendment 3 – would increase the cigarette tax by $0.80 to $0.97 per pack, and provide a portion of the revenue to tobacco prevention and cessation programs. The American Lung Association Strongly Supports Amendment 3.

Nevada:

Question 5 – would prohibit smoking in most public places and workplaces, including all restaurants and repeal preemption of local ordinances, supported by the American Lung Association and other public health groups. The American Lung Association Strongly Supports Question 5.
Question 4 – casino gambling-sponsored initiative that would essentially maintain the status quo on smoking restrictions in Nevada. The American Lung Association Strongly Opposes Question 4.

Ohio:

Issue 5 – would prohibit smoking in almost all public places and workplaces, including restaurants and bars, supported by the American Lung Association and other public health groups. The American Lung Association Strongly Supports Issue 5.
Issue 4 – tobacco-industry sponsored constitutional amendment that would continue to allow smoking in many workplaces and preempt all local ordinances. The American Lung Association Strongly Opposes Issue 4.

South Dakota:

Measure 2: would increase the cigarette tax by $1.00 to $1.53 per pack and provide a portion of the revenue to tobacco prevention programs. The American Lung Association Strongly Supports Measure 2.

Please do your part and vote! And hopefully those of us in other states will some day get a chance to follow your good example.

Keep up the good fight!

Regarding Prop 86 in California... most orgs are opposing the proposition because the majority (90%) of revenues would go to other programs... 10% or less to smoking cessation programs. It would be a sad day when teachers relied on their students to smoke for their salaries, supplies and what have you. Most thinking folk around these parts oppose 86.

Proposition 201: Smoke-Free Arizona Act
The Smoke-Free Arizona Act protects the right of Arizonans to breathe clean indoor air by prohibiting smoking in enclosed public places and places of employment. Breathing second-hand smoke harms children, seniors and people with existing health problems the most. Enforcement by the Arizona Department of Health Services will be paid for by a tax on cigarettes of one tenth of one cent per cigarette. Limited exceptions are provided such as private residences, retail tobacco stores, and outdoor patios. No smoking signs will be posted in all areas where smoking is prohibited.

I'm happy to report that in California prop 86 failed (despite erroneous and narrow minded support by some anti-smoking groups.)

i'm also happy to report that state issue 4 (a state constitutional amendment put on the ballot by an initiative sponsored by big tobacco) was soundly defeated, 64%/36%, and that state issue 5 (a statewide law put onto the ballot by an initiative sponsored by smokefreeohio) was approved by a 58%/42% margin. Very Happy
