a number of people have asked about the 118 users online statistic for september 14th; many of them thought they missed a party of some sort...
the real reason for the 118 "users" online at once was an attack against the site by a person (or persons) unknown; the attacker was apparently trying to exploit a vulnerability in an earlier version of the bulletin board software by launching (virtually) simultaneous attacks from nearly 600 infected servers. fortunately, we have the latest version of the software, and the attacks were ineffective in compromising our server.
although the attack is ongoing, and actually began on september 13th, the peak of the attack was on the 14th, when we received nearly 3,000 requests (all variations on a particular malformed url that was intended to give the attacker(s) access to our server) within a short period of time. at its peak, the attack would have looked to the software like 118 separate users online at once.
so no, you didn't miss the party. _________________
